Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) Scholarships Program: Transforming the Future For Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students - Apply by May 20th, 2019

About the CHS National Scholarship Program

The Canadian Hearing Society proudly offers scholarships to Deaf and hard of hearing students to help break down barriers to higher education and build brighter futures.

Scholarships of $3,000 a year for full-time students and $1,000 a year for part-time students are awarded to top qualified candidates who are pursuing post-secondary education at an accredited institution, inside or outside of Canada. Awards may cover tuition, residence or educational resources. Additionally, CHS is making a commitment to award this year’s winners with up to four years in funding to help remove as many financial barriers as possible, and to significantly reduce the stress of finding funding each year. The exact number of awards will be dependent on the number and ranking of qualified applicants.

Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada;
    Applicants must be either hard of hearing or Deaf;
    Applicants must be 17 years of age or older and attending an accredited post-secondary institution in the Fall of 2019 as first-time or returning students; or mature students, 19 years of age or older.

How to Apply

For first-time applicants - Eligibility is based on the overall assessment of the following application materials:

    Photocopy proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency with date of birth;
    At least one audiogram documenting hearing loss of 50dB or greater, pure tone average, in both ears;
    Proof of Fall 2019 acceptance to an accredited post-secondary institution (proof of registration will be required before students receive their awards);
    Typed 12-pt font, 250-word essay in English or French, or a YouTube link to a 6-minute video in ASL/LSQ, as outlined in Section 3 (page 4 of this application form);
    Community Involvement checklist and letter(s), as outlined in Section 4 (page 4 of this application form); and,
    Two (2) letters of reference, as outlined in Section 5 (page 5 of this application form).

For return applicants - Each return student will be required to:

    Complete an abridged “Return Student” application by the May deadline;
    Submit a supporting essay or video; And
    Show proof of registration in August, prior to receiving a cash award.

Selection Process

A Canadian Hearing Society committee of educators, industry leaders, staff, and members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community will review qualified applications and select the winners. All winners will be notified by September 11, 2019 and recognized across the Canadian Hearing Society community later in the month. Scholarship awards will be distributed upon receipt of proof of registration. Please note, all scholarship awards are taxable income.
