The passing of Steven Estey, a Canadian disability rights champion

Steven Estey passed away in the afternoon of September 11, 2023. This is devastating news for the disability community and to all who knew and loved Steve. Steve was a significant human rights leader and champion in the Canadian disability community and on the international scene. Steve was a critical force at the United Nations in the development of the Convention on The Rights of Persons With Disabilities (CRPD) and the ratification by the Canadian government of the CRPD in 2010. Steve was President of the National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) from 1990-1992 and went on to work as a consultant on a number of important NEADS projects. He later became National Coordinator of the Council of Canadians With Disabilities (CCD) and continued his long association with international disability organizations including Disabled Peoples’ International (DPI). Steve was key point person on many of CCD’s human rights initiatives in Canada and abroad for many years. Steve was a wonderful friend to many of us in the disability community who loved him dearly. At this very sad time we send our deepest condolences to Steve’s wife Anne, son Isai and family. More information to follow. Take a few moments to watch this video on YouTube of Steven Estey celebrating and reflecting on achievements of the disability community on the International Day of Persons With Disabilities in 2021.
