Enhancing Accessibility in Post-Secondary Education Institutions
Admissions Resources
The resources below are best practice examples of how PSE institutions manage accommodation for students with disabilities during the admissions process.
College/University Resources
- Students applying to the University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology may request accommodations during the admission interview process. http://www.uoit.ca/assets/Public/PDF/Disability%20Accommodations%20Request%20for%20the%20Admissions%20Interview.pdf
- Students with disabilities who do not meet the current admission requirements or who otherwise wish to have their disability considered may apply for special consideration as may all other students who have extenuating circumstances. This request goes to the appropriate admissions committee, which then acts in consultation with the Advisor to Students with Disabilities to make a decision. http://ug.cal.dal.ca/ADRQ.htm
- York University provides detailed information on the benefits of self-identifying a disability during the admission process, as well as the process and required documentation for different disability types. http://futurestudents.yorku.ca/requirements/disabilities
- College of the North Atlantic allows for special admissions for those with special circumstances. Applicants who fail to meet all of the criteria for admission may be recommended for acceptance. http://www.cna.nl.ca/disability-services/transition-to-college/special-admissions.asp
- Students at Nova Scotia Community College who have an Individual Program Plan (IPP) or alternate high school program will be considered under NSCC Special Admissions. This provides students with extra support in the application program and allows for better transition services. http://www.disabilityservices.nscc.ca/en/home/accessdisabilityservices/specialadmissions/
