AMI announces winners of 2017 AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship

Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) announced today the winners of its 2017 AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship program. The program, which launched in 2012, is open to Canadian students enrolled in a diploma or degree program at a Canadian post-secondary school. Two scholarships valued at $5,000 each are awarded annually to students with a disability, one in English and one in French.

The winners of this years’ AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship are Shelby Brown of Calgary, Alberta and Yan Gobeil from Montreal, Quebec. Shelby is in year three of a Bachelor of Arts program majoring in Native Studies at Vancouver Island University while Yan is pursuing his Doctorate in Physics at McGill University.

“Studying with a disability is a monumental, challenging and at times very isolating undertaking,” explains Shelby, “but it is also a very enriching and worthwhile experience. For me, university is about strengthening community. The support, inspiration and encouragement that AMI has given me is something I am so incredibly thankful for and will never forget. To know that there are people and organizations out there who believe in me is a further affirmation that I am on a positive path.”

AMI partnered, once again, with the National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) to administer the program. Since its founding in 1986, NEADS’ has been mandated to support full access to education and employment for post-secondary students and graduates with disabilities across Canada. Information and eligibility requirements for the 2018 AMI Scholarship program will be posted on the AMI websites in February 2018.
