This year marks the 20th anniversary of Mad Pride Toronto – and the first year of celebrations in a number of other Canadian cities including Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, and Hamilton! The Mad Pride Hamilton Organizing Committee is a group of local community members - self-identifying Mad (as in madness, not an acronym) people and our supporters. It was struck in May 2013 by Hamilton members of the Mad Students Society (www.madstudentsociety.com / www.facebook.com/MadStudentSociety), a national peer support group of students who have experienced the psychiatric system that has been meeting bimonthly at McMaster since September 2012. (Next meeting: July 2nd. Email outreach@madstudentsociety.com to join.) Mad Pride is an arts, culture, and heritage festival created by psychiatric survivors, consumers, mad people, and folks the world has labeled ‘mentally ill’ to celebrate our lives and community (www.madprideto.com). Why ‘Mad’? We’re using the term ‘Mad’, like many others, as an umbrella to reference the equity-seeking group of people who individually and collectively use a variety of self/together-identifiers including those listed above as well as: people with lived experience, people in recovery, and people with psychiatric disabilities. It ties us to a long history of Mad people and Mad social justice movement organizing that predate those labeled with ‘mental illness’ since psychiatry’s invention and proliferation over the last 200 years.
