Canadian Centre for Diversity
Peer Leaders Forum in Halifax - Canadian Centre for Diversity
Education
Halifax, Nova Scotia
April 30, 2013
(416) 597-9693 ext. 43
The Canadian Centre for Diversity will be holding a Peer Leaders Forum in Halifax on April 30th, World Trade and Convention Centre (WTCC), 1800 Argyle Street, Suite 301-303. This forum is an annual conference for all Peers Leaders in the region. The theme of this year’s forum is: Being An Ally: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers. It is a chance for Peers to network, learn together, celebrate successes and collaborate on ideas for school-wide initiatives. About 100 high school students are expected to attend. Component Goals: The Peer Leaders Forum provides an opportunity for Peer Leaders from high schools throughout the region to connect with community members, meet with other student leaders, and collaborate on school-wide initiatives to promote the value of diversity, difference, and inclusion. The overall goal is to share thoughts and ideas on issues related to diversity within each of the participating schools and to share best practices to effect positive social change. About 100 students are expected to attend. The day begins with a panel discussion focused on anti-diversity behaviors such as discrimination, exclusion and bullying. Panelists share their personal stories and discuss how their experiences have shaped their desire to make positive social change. After lunch, participants reflect and discuss their understanding of the panel discussion in small group workshops. The Peer Leaders Forum concludes with opportunities for participants to collaborate with fellow students and teachers on school-wide initiatives to promote the value of diversity, difference, and inclusion to their entire school community. Learning Objectives: 1.To provide Peer Leaders with the insights they require to be leaders committed to the promotion of respect for diversity, difference and inclusion. 2.To celebrate and build upon student successes in the Peer Leaders Network and similar student led programs that educate young people about the value of diversity, difference and inclusion. 3.To promote meaningful interactions among students from different schools to learn about each other and from each other. 4.To share best practices around the creation of impactful school-wide initiatives.
