Psyching Up For School: A Peer Support Hang Out

When? Wednesday, September 2 from 5:30-7:30pm

Where? Email hamilton.mad.students@gmail.com for the top secret confidential location on the McMaster University campus.

Who? Students in the Hamilton-area who personally experience psychiatric systems, madness, mental illness, mental health concerns, loneliness, emotional or spiritual distress, etc.

How do we as Mad students/students labelled with mental health disabilities psych up for the start of a new school year (and, for some, a new school)?

• Perhaps you’re worrying about setting an appointment with your disability advisor or prof to arrange accommodations?
• Figuring ways to save money on textbooks?
• Looking for a part-time job or volunteer experience that welcomes people with mental health concerns?
• Avoiding all of the above and dreaming of the zombie apocalypse or running away?
• Are you stocking up on Ativan, Red Bull, St. John’s Wort, Netflix, chocolate, sleep, sun, sex, or time with friends?

Let’s psych up together by sharing our experiences and supporting each other as peers.

Not in school this term but hoping to return? Come chill and chat about whatever else you’re psyching up for or psyching out about.

We look forward to hanging with new members, frequent faces, and folks we haven't seen in a while! Tea and treats provided. Featuring: arts & crafts & COLOURING if you want to get creative.

Can’t make the meeting? Looking for other support? Join our active email discussion listserv to continue this and other conversations. The listserv is a private place for members to talk about our lives, support each other, discuss ideas, share info/resources/events/news, and arrange spontaneous gatherings.

Questions? Directions? Nervous? Need Something? For further info, location details, to join the listserv, or if you have accommodation needs, want someone to meet you at the bus stop, or would like to chat with a member before the meeting, please email Alise at hamilton.mad.students@gmail.com.

Spread the word! Share this event on Facebook.

About us:

The Hamilton Mad Students Collective formed in 2012. Members (currently ~200 of us) are students age 16+ in the Hamilton-area who are attending or preparing to attend any school (in any program and level of study). This includes students on a leave of absence from school and planning to return.

All members self-identify as having personally experienced madness, mental health disability, mental illness, significant spiritual or emotional distress, and/or the psychiatric/mental health system. Some refer to ourselves as Mad, crazy, service users, psychiatric survivors, neuroatypical, mentally ill, or disabled.
